Prep roundup: Hockinson stuns Woodland at district volleyball

League champion Beavers eliminated after two losses

Bethany Karlsen had 36 assists and Grace Russell had 10 kills and nine digs and Hockinson stunned Woodland in the first round of the Class 2A volleyball tournament in Tumwater, leading to the Beavers’ early exit.

Hockinson won the first-round match 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 to advance to play Black Hills in the district semifinals on Saturday. Emily Robinson added 19 digs for the Hawks, who advanced to the tournament through a win in a play-in match earlier this week.

Woodland, the 2A Greater St. Helens League champion, followed up its loss to Hockinson with a five-set loss to Washougal, eliminating the Beavers from the tournament.

Washougal will play the loser of Tumwater-Ridgefield in one loser-out match at 1 p.m. Saturday. Columbia River will face the loser of Black Hills-Hockinson in the other loser-out match Saturday.

The winner of those two matches will play for third-place and the final berth to the 2A state tournament.

Haley Paul had 10 digs, Delaney Nicoll added 12 assists and nine kills, and Anika Nicoll had 10 digs and six digs as Ridgefield beat Centralai 25-9, 25-15, 25-13 in another first-round match.

Ridgefield will face Tumwater at 11 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals for a state berth.

Emma Adams had 15 digs, Lexi Williams had 29 assists and Jayden Foster had 10 kills as Columbia River eliminated Centralia 25-13, 25-18, 27-25. That came after River opened with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-12 loss to Tumwater.

Firm Foundation falls in title match — Firm Foundation lost to Three Rivers Christian in five-sets in the title match of the 1B district tournament in Tumwater.

Three Rivers won 24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 13-25, 15-7. Firm Foundation advanced to the title match with a 25-16, 25-25, 24-26, 25-22 win over Naselle.

Firm Foundation will now face Klickitat-Glenwood at 6 p.m. Saturday at home for a berth to the 1B state tournament.

Girls soccer

Union 5, Curtis 2 — Isabelle Morales had two goals and one assists and MaKayla Woods added a goal and three assists as Union clinched a berth to the 4A state tournament with a win in the 4A bi-district tournament.

Union advances to play Henry Jackson in Everett next Tuesday or Wednesday at state.

Puyallup 2, Skyview 0 — Skyview had its season end with a loss in the bi-district tournament.

King’s Way Christian 5, Elma 1 — Aurora Espinoza-Chaney had two goals as the Knights clinched a state berth with a win in the 1A district playoffs.

King’s Way Christian will play at Montesano at 2 p.m. Saturday for the district title.
