Volunteer Opportunities

The city of Vancouver invites families and groups to help on National Family Volunteer Day from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 18. Help spruce up Vancouver’s newest park, Raymond E. Shaffer Park, 7806 N.E. 58th St. Spread bark chips, pull weeds and pick up litter. Wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Tools and snacks provided. Volunteers younger than 18 must have a signed consent form, which will be available onsite.

Clark County Food Bank seeks help for the annual “Turkey Trot” at Salmon Creek Regional Park, which attracts 1,200 runners, walkers and friends of the food bank. A variety of help is needed on Nov. 21 and 22, and on Thanksgiving Day.

Clark County Public Works Parks Division seeks help for the Great Lake Rake slated for 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 18 at Vancouver Lake Park, 6801 N.W. Lower River Road, Vancouver.

FISH of Orchards needs volunteers to check people in at the front desk, work in the lobby, pack and restock donations, and to work on the dock, lifting loads of up to 35 pounds.

The Humane Society of Southwest Washington seeks help at its ReTails Thrift Store holiday shop. Stock shelves, assist customers, set up displays, assemble and decorate trees.

The Salvation Army has many short-term opportunities, including bell-ringing. Volunteers are needed to help families fill out paperwork Nov. 13 and 14 for holiday needs. Close to Christmas, volunteers are needed to distribute boxes.

Vancouver Public Schools seeks “Walking School Bus” volunteers at Washington Elementary, 2908 S St., Vancouver. Meet children at designated stops in the Rose Village neighborhood and walk with them to school, from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. Lunch buddies are also needed to meet a child once a week throughout the school year, have lunch together and socialize.
