A 14-year-old Columbia River High School student was badly hurt Wednesday morning when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle while walking to school.

The girl was walking west in the crosswalk before 7 a.m. at 99th Street and Hazel Dell Avenue, about half a mile east of the school, when she was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Nicholas Woods of Vancouver, according to Clark County Sheriff Sgt. Alex Schoening.

He said Woods had run a red light.

The girl suffered some serious injuries, including broken bones, but it “appeared she’ll recover,” Schoening said.

Woods was cited for negligent driving and driving without insurance.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash, and he cooperated with law enforcement at the scene, Schoening said.
