The American Heart Association on Thursday launched its annual Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

The program provides knitted red hats to babies born at participating Portland hospitals during American Heart Month in February. It aims to raise awareness about heart disease, the No. 1 killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects.

The American Heart Association seeks volunteers to knit or crochet red baby hats to distribute to participating hospitals. Sample knitting patterns are available on the association website, www.heart.org/littlehatsbighearts.

Hats can be mailed or dropped off no later than Jan. 12 at the American Heart Association’s office at 4380 S.W. Macadam Ave., Suite 480, Portland, OR 97239.

Volunteers are also needed to wash and assemble packets with hats and literature. The association is accepting yarn donations to support the program. Visit the website for details.
