Letter: Lessons by which to live

By Jan Karcher, Vancouver

What I have learned so far this year:

  • I do research before expressing an opinion or making a declaration.
  • I don’t believe everything in the media; I do independent research instead.
  • For best results, I prefer communicating with others in person.
  • I find that frequent use of superlatives minimizes the effects of my statements.
  • I reach for diplomacy, especially at difficult times.
  • I am willing to pay for a good haircut.
  • Holding grudges or seeking revenge makes me feel bad about myself.
  • I read books. They are more entertaining and have more information than 140 characters.
  • I listen to and learn from those who know more than I.
  • I question the motives of people who curry favor.
