SEATTLE — When Danni Messina sent out a tweet promising her followers to donate money to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for every favorite and retweet she received, she says she never expected it to go viral.

The holiday season inspired the 19-year-old to post a tweet over the Thanksgiving weekend to her 600 followers pledging to donate 25 cents for every favorite and 50 cents every retweet.

After the tweet went viral, Messina found herself committed to donating over $200,000, much more than she expected.

Although Messina has a limited budget as a college student at Washington State University, she says she intends to keep her word.

She set up a GoFundMe page which has already raised $50,000.

She hopes to raise $200,000 by Christmas.
