Letter: Embrace what flag represents

By Margaret O'Claire, VANCOUVER
Published: October 9, 2017, 6:00am

On a recent trip to Germany, we learned an interesting fact: the people of Germany do not display their flag except for national holidays, and then only on government buildings. The German people remember and never want to repeat the extreme nationalism and flag waving promoted by Adolf Hitler, which ultimately led them into a devastating war.

Our county would do well to take a lesson from this. I am not saying that we should disrespect our flag, but we should embrace the liberties for which it stands. We should rejoice in the fact that we can speak freely without fear of being sent to prison or, worse yet, to a death camp.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
