A driver suspected of driving under the influence lead Clark County sheriff’s deputies on a late night chase before being apprehended.

The incident began at 11 p.m. last night when a sheriff’s deputy attempted to make contact with the driver of silver PT Cruiser located at the 200 block of N.E. Chkalov Drive. The vehicle was missing its passenger side front tire and deputies wanted to determine if it had been in an accident or if its driver was in need of assistance, according to the release.

After making contact, the driver fled on N.E. Chkalov Drive and N.E. 112th Avenue in what the press release describes as a “reckless manner,” traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of travel, disobeying traffic control lights while throwing sparks from the missing tire.

The Vancouver Police Department assisted in the pursuit of the vehicle as it continued northbound on N.E. 112th Avenue and into the Five Corners area in Orchards, coming to a stop in a driveway in the 10500 block of N.E. 71st Street, according to the news release.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Carpenter, 23, was arrested without incident. According to the news release, he will be booked for DUI, attempting to elude and driving with a suspended license. The male passenger of the vehicle was identified and later released.

During the pursuit, Carpenter swerved at deputies as they attempted to perform a Pursuit Intervention Technique maneuver, a tactic used to force a fleeing car to turn sideways and cause the driver to lose control and stop.
