Letter: JHB and gun laws

In response to the Oct. 10 Columbian editorial (In Our View: Dereliction of Duty) that detailed Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s (R-Battle Ground) evasiveness on gun issues and legislation, there is one measure on which she is unequivocal. Herrera Beutler is a sponsor of H.R. 38, the federal Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This measure will establish a federal standard for concealed carry permits that supersedes existing state laws. Currently Washington does not recognize some other states’ concealed carry permits because those states’ criteria for granting the permits are weaker than Washington’s (e.g., no background check). H.R. 38 will force us to accept any and all concealed carry permits.

Herrera Beutler’s lack of concern for the safety and well-being of her constituents — indeed, for all Washington residents — should be a real concern to her constituents. Do as the editorial asks and contact Herrera Beutler’s Washington, D.C., office at 202-225-3536, or her local office at 360-695-6292. Ask her to reconsider her sponsorship and protect not only her constituents in Clark County, but all Washington residents by voting against H.R. 38.
