Letter: Vote for the future in port race

By Don Steinke, Vancouver
Published: October 26, 2017, 6:00am

The port election is not a partisan race or about the candidates. The election is about protecting our health, our economy, and our children’s future.

When rail cars or pipelines unload into storage tanks, residual fumes are pushed out. Infrared videos allow us to see pollution that would otherwise be invisible. See for yourself. Google “Plains Pipeline Highway 285 station, Reeves County TX.”

The proposed oil terminal would unload approximately 450 rail cars per day. West Vancouver will be most affected by the fumes, particularly at night and in the summer.

We don’t need an oil terminal to create jobs. Clark County added 10,500 jobs last year. The reputation and pollution associated with being an oil town would make Vancouver less attractive and likely result in job losses.

Elections matter. One candidate is funded by the oil companies, the other has taken no money from fossil fuel interests. Our future is at stake. Please vote.
