The defending state tennis champion doesn’t go down easily.
Skyview’s Andrew Kabacy rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to beat Battle Ground’s Gunnar Harlan 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 Saturday at the Boeing Employees Tennis Club in Kent to win the 4A bi-district title for the second year in a row.
Both seniors, who know each other well, are returning to the 4A state tournament in May — Kabacy as defending champ, and Harlan, who placed fourth at state last year.
“He likes to make it dramatic,” said Skyview coach Jay Gowen. “When he’s in a pickle, he takes it to another level.”
Skyview, the defending state team champion which placed second at bi-district, will also be sending Chris Sheppert and Joey Gaylor to state. They placed fifth at bi-district by beating Union’s Kyle Mosier and Brayden Shoemaker 6-3, 6-4.
District doubles champions Alex Calpagiu and Quinn Lamey of Union placed third at bi-district and will be going to state. Calpagiu, a senior, won a state doubles title last year with Andrew Chanthavong, who graduated last spring.
