Letter: Herrera Beutler should take a stand

I applaud Senators Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., for saying “enough” to President Donald Trump’s bullying. The Republican establishment cannot continue to pretend that the president’s behavior is excusable or irrelevant — it is harming their own legitimacy, and more importantly, our country’s standing in the world.

If Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, lacks the political courage to be the first Republican representative to call for impeachment, she should, at least, speak out for the power of Congress to reign in the president, push for the release of his tax forms, publicly support the independent investigation of his campaign’s connections to Russia, or take a stand against picking fights with the mourning family members of our fallen soldiers. She should demonstrate that social norms and American values matter more than tax cuts for the wealthy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
