Letter: Oil terminal proposal stinks

By Robert N. Low, VANCOUVER

Vancouver is at a critical tipping point. Oil terminal or no? One man can tip the scales. Your vote counts.

What is at stake? Vancouver Energy wants to install the largest oil transfer terminal in the U.S., 2 miles west of downtown. It is owned by Andeavor, aka Tesoro. Caught exceeding air-pollution permits, their subsidiaries and Par Hawaii Refining’s were forced to install a total of $403 million in new pollution controls at existing operations.

The pending air quality permit tells the story. It says that the “best available control technology” doesn’t require them to burn the vapors emitted by the tank farm. That tank farm will emit a volume of approximately five million gallons of toxic vapors per day, laden with stinking compounds of sulfur, benzene, and dozens of other noxious compounds.

These fumes are highly volatile, extremely toxic, in many cases cause cancer, and stink for miles downwind. Prevailing winds will blanket these toxic vapors over our town for miles downwind, turning Vancouver into a stinking oil town and destroying our quality of life.
