Letter: Know both sides of the issue

Seems like there are some pretty strong opinions whether Confederate monuments should come down or stay. Some folks are concerned that for political correctness, removing monuments is an attempt to change or at least cover up our history, so they need to stay.

On the other side, some folks see them as an attempt to continue the subjugation of an entire group of Americans, so they need to go.

Consider adding a monument beside the Confederate ones, depicting the cause for which they were valiantly fighting. Maybe a cutaway view of passenger accommodations on a slave ship, or the branding of people, or the standard bull-whipping for uppity slaves, or just people in chains to show the hopelessness.

Doing this would clarify history, not change it. I think that this approach, or something similar, could satisfy concerns of both groups.

We just have to listen to the other side.
