Winterhawks top Thunderbirds in home opener, 7-2

A four-goal third period highlighted by two from Matthew Quigley helped seal the Portland Winterhawks’ 7-2 Western Hockey League victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday at the Moda Center.

Portland (2-0), playing its home opener, took the lead for good at 3-2 on a goal by Henri Jokiharju with 1:27 to play in the second period.

Joachim Blichfeld contributed three assists in the game. Goals were also scored by Cody Glass, Skyler McKenzie, Keoni Texeira and Brad Ginnell as Portland outshot Seattle 52-16.

Cole Kehler made 14 saves in goal for Portland, which hosts Prince George at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Memorial Coliseum.
