A windstorm with gusts in the range of 40 to 55 mph remains possible Saturday, the National Weather Service in Portland said Thursday.

A high wind watch has been issued in advance of the storm, which is expected to bring southerly winds Friday night until Saturday evening. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are possible.

The storm has the potential to knock down trees, blow away loose objects, cause power outages and affect driving, particularly for tall vehicles.

Rain will accompany the windstorm. Some areas may also get lightning.

The timing of the peak winds remains unknown, but the gusts should start to pick up on Saturday morning.

Winds will be strongest along the Washington Coast, as the storm takes aim at Vancouver Island, Canada.

Windstorms are not uncommon in the Pacific Northwest this time of year. Thursday marked the 46th anniversary of the tornado that killed six people in Vancouver on April 5, 1972. It remains the deadliest tornado in state history.
