SEATTLE — Authorities say the number of intoxicated drivers arrested while children are in the car is rising in western Washington state.

KING-TV reports Washington State Patrol says District 8 troopers have made 30 DUI arrests with minors present this year. That number is typically the average for an entire year.

According to troopers, the two most recent arrests occurred Wednesday, involving a five-year-old passenger in Shelton and a 16-year-old passenger in Elma.

Intoxicated drivers arrested with children in the car could face charges of reckless endangerment for each minor present in addition to the DUI charge. Authorities also contact Child Protective Services in these cases.

The western Washington district includes Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Kitsap, Mason, Pacific and Wakiakum counties.
