The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington aims to raise $1.2 million during its fifth annual online giving holiday, Give More 24!, which is set for Sept. 20.

Last year, 3,422 individual donors raised $1,033,825 in a 24-hour span for charities serving Clark, Cowlitz or Skamania counties. The Community Foundation hopes to bump up the number of donors this year to 4,000.

“Give More 24! empowers people to choose which causes matter most to them, which in turn empowers nonprofits to make more positive impacts in our community,” Jennifer Rhoads, president of the Community Foundation, said in a news release. The Community Foundation is the host and marketing power behind the giving holiday.

Donors give online at https://www.givemore24.org/ where they can filter the more than 150 participating organizations by location or cause to identify nonprofits they want to support. With a minimum $10 donation, people often give to more than one nonprofit. Causes include animal welfare, arts and culture, education, environment, health, housing, hunger, religion, social justice and veterans; last year education and health drew the most financial support.

All of the donations will be tallied in real time, so people can track the progress of their favorite nonprofit and share messages via social media.

This year’s website will have a new feature that allows supporters to lead their own fundraising campaigns on behalf of a participating nonprofit. Although most donors are local, last year’s gifts came from 40 states and as far away as Kigali, Rwanda.

Organizations participating in the online giving marathon can earn matching funds and time-specific prizes. The day is often filled with parties and other activities to promote giving.
