Letter: Preserve Academy and its legacy

By Lorinda Oliver, Vancouver
Published: August 17, 2018, 6:00am

I’m a descendent of Washington state pioneers and have a vested interest in the state’s history. Mother Joseph’s Providence Academy in downtown Vancouver is part of that history and should be duly preserved.

The Historic Trust, which owns the Academy, indicates they may sell the western-most parcels along C Street to Marathon Development. Marathon would like the “all clear” to build two buildings loaded with condos.

Vancouver is growing and I understand the need for housing, business and entertainment to grow along with it, but at what expense? Mother Joseph is one of the most famous pioneers in Washington state, known for her advocacy for the poor, sick and orphans. Her legacy should be protected out of awe and respect for what she accomplished.

What would be her reaction to the proposed buildings? She probably wouldn’t approve because they do nothing to help those in need. In 1953, the American Institute of Architects declared her “the first architect of the Pacific Northwest.” She probably wouldn’t approve of the look or footprint of the buildings either.

Please don’t disrespect or sell our Washington and Catholic heritage.
