Letter: Examine facts about range burning

By Dale Thorsen, Vancouver
Published: August 22, 2018, 6:00am

This is in response to Dexter C. McPherson’s letter, “Fires rejuvenate public lands” (July 22, Our Readers’ Views). I agree that fire is a natural part of western North America’s ecosystem. However, I don’t believe that cheatgrass (bromus tectorum), a non-native grass that has invaded much of our rangeland, will be reduced by more burning.

When it comes to Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond and, for that matter, the Bureau of Land Management, it would be wise to read the book “Sacred Cows at the Public Trough” by Denzel and Nancy Ferguson. The Fergusons go a long way back with the Hammonds. Everything in the book is backed up with plenty of evidence.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
