The Vancouver Fire Department is looking for new volunteers to join its Fire Corps community education program.

If you’re a U.S. citizen who is at least 16 years old and can pass a background check, you’re eligible to apply to become a community education volunteer.

Fire Corps is not a volunteer firefighter program, but more of a community outreach effort. The program addresses issues related to fire safety and preparedness, but volunteers do not participate alongside firefighters in emergency response. Instead, Vancouver’s Fire Corps volunteers have a number of duties, including staffing community safety events, making presentations to local preschoolers and kindergartners and installing smoke alarms.

While Fire Corps accepts volunteer applications year-round, the deadline for applications to the community education program is Sept. 21. Additionally, applicants must complete Fire Corps training, commit to five volunteer events and attend at least seven monthly meetings per year.

In a press release on Friday, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said that anyone who … has an interest in improving the safety of our community is encouraged to apply for a community education volunteer position.

“We rely on our Fire Corps volunteers to help us connect with and educate our citizens about fire and life safety,” she said.
