A 43-year-old Vancouver man was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree assault overnight Sunday after allegedly punching a security guard patrolling businesses on Southeast Chkalov Drive.

Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in an email that officers responded to a call of shots fired about 2:30 a.m. at 700 S.E. Chkalov Dr.

Security guards there were checking on a man on the sidewalk who had a firearm tucked in his waistband and was acting strange, Kapp said. The man walked away, but he caught a security guard by surprise a short time later.

“While the security guard was walking by some bushes, the male came out from behind the bushes and asked what the security guard was doing, and the security guard heard a weapon discharge,” Kapp said.

The security guard retreated toward his vehicle and then began to worry that the man may have shot himself. The guard found the man, who yelled and “at one point punches him,” Kapp said.

Two other security guards restrained the man and police officers arrived shortly thereafter.

Justin D. Rothgeb was arrested on suspicion of unlawful discharge of a firearm, in addition to fourth-degree assault.
