Hockinson School Board approves two levies for vote

The Hockinson School Board approved two levy resolutions: One is a partial replacement, and the other is a new capital levy. Both will be up for vote on the February ballot.

The proposed 2020-2022 replacement school programs and operations levy would partially replace a levy that is expiring in 2019, and is considered a partial replacement because new state funding legislation limits the amount districts can request from a levy to $1.50 per $1,000 assessed property value. The district estimates a levy rate of $1.50 per $1,000 would collect $2,685,000 in 2020, $3,005,000 in 2021 and $3,335,000 in 2022. The money would help fund transportation, special education and extra staffing, such as in nursing and security.

The 2020-2022 capital levy for technology and school improvements requests $800,000 per year for three years. The district estimates the rate of that levy would be 45 cents per $1,000 in 2020, 40 cents per $1,000 in 2021 and 36 cents per $1,000 in 2022. Hockinson did not request a capital levy in 2016, because the bond was used to build the replacement Hockinson Middle School, update Hockinson High School and allowed for some technology upgrades at that time.
