Letter: Homeless should clean up

“The poor will always be with us” is a quote from the Bible and we are all witness to this here in Vancouver.

The Columbian’s Dec. 3 front-page article “Homeless and cited” outlines the cleanup done at the Share House site for the homeless.

The photos show workers in biohazard protection cleaning up needles and body waste.

It is commendable that we set aside a place for the homeless but we are forgetting an important understanding; where is the accountability of these people who use our streets as a homestead?

Why are we taxpayers subsidizing cleanup when these people should be required to clean up after themselves?

We teach our children consequences for negative behavior, so why do we allow folks to leave this waste behind when they move on?

The homeless find themselves in hopeless situations but do they leave their responsibilities behind when they have to live on the streets?

To make the homeless clean up after themselves should be a primary concern for those who sit on the Council for the Homeless boards.

It is simply “good manners” when one is a “guest” of the city.
