Weather Eye: Warmer, wetter conditions come rolling in this week

Winter has arrived as the east winds were blowing Saturday, keeping Vancouver’s high at 43. Other areas around the county barely broke 40. And what about the overnight low on Friday morning? Vancouver dipped to 23. Cold, but far from the record 9 degrees in 1972.

The weather system Friday night and early Saturday dropped .01 of an inch of rain in Vancouver. I had a report of light snow and sleet at the 1,200-foot level above Washougal on Livingston Mountain.

Farther east on Highway 14, there was light snow or sleet accumulation but nothing to stop traffic.

A stronger weather system rolls through today. Elevations of 200 feet in the Gorge should have another bout of light snow, sleet and freezing rain.

So far in December, Vancouver has had .05 of an inch of rain, which is more than 1.50 inches below average. We should get a half-inch or more today from the latest storm. Another rainy system rolls in on Tuesday and again on Thursday and Friday.

The Washington Cascades are going to get dumped on this week, with 2 feet or better of snow. Not as much in the Oregon Cascades but the ski areas on Mount Hood should build their snow pack.

This week expect highs in the mid- to upper-40s, and lows in the mid- to upper-30s.
