Letter: Stand against methanol refinery

By Theresa Schumacher, St. Helens
Published: December 23, 2018, 6:00am

The Chinese-owned company Northwest Innovation Works wants to build the world’s largest methanol refinery in Kalama and recently released a Supplemental Environmental Impact Survey which vastly underestimates impacts in a poor attempt to “greenwash” this project. Don’t be deceived! This plant will cause irreparable harm by turning this area into a petrochemical processing center for China’s benefit, plundering our natural resources and becoming one of the worst polluters right on our majestic Columbia River in the name of corporate greed. It will:

• Spew over 1 million tons of pollutants annually;

• Devour as much electricity as all of Cowlitz County, possibly forcing residents to pay for new infrastructure;

• Guzzle one-third of the fracked-gas in the entire state of Washington;

• Guzzle 5 million gallons of local water daily;

• Seize private property and part of a historic cemetery;

NWIW also weaseled out of paying $143 million in taxes, making their slogan “Investing in Community” a farce.

We’re from St. Helens, Ore., and stand with folks on both sides of the Columbia against this plant. We urge everyone to defend our beautiful area from these foreign corporate marauders until they leave. NoMethanol360.com.
