PORTLAND — Portland online security specialist Tripwire laid off employees last month, changes the company said will be offset by hiring elsewhere in the business.

“The changes we implemented in January were reflective of the rebalancing of resources needed to grow faster in the future and respond to market needs,” Tripwire President Dhrupad Trivedi said in a written statement.

Tripwire said it employs just under 400, roughly half in Portland.

A source familiar with the layoffs said close to 30 people lost their jobs in the cutbacks.

Tripwire declined to comment on that figure but did not dispute it.

Founded in 1997, Tripwire’s technology helps organizations identify security threats and technical vulnerabilities in their computer systems and design them so they’re more secure.

Tripwire sold for $710 million in 2014 to a St. Louis company called Belden Inc. that makes communications equipment.

Tripwire said it is boosting its spending in product innovation and is hiring in Portland for its research and development team, even as it has cut back on other parts of the business.
