Letter: Congress must invest in children

As Valentine’s Day approaches, we remember that parents everywhere love their kids and want what’s best for them. Sadly, many children around the world and here at home do not have what they deserve — a fair opportunity to succeed.

High-quality early childhood education helps give all kids a strong start in life. Pre-K and child care help prepare children for kindergarten, especially for those from low-income families. Kids living in poverty who don’t have access to high-quality early learning often fall behind their peers developmentally. As a public school student, I have seen firsthand that many never catch up.

My family is very fortunate to have access to medical care when we need it. Many families aren’t so lucky. Thousands of children die every day from treatable illnesses, such as pneumonia and malaria. My heart hurts to think of the children who can’t access these essential services.

Congress has the power to make life better for children and families in the U.S. and around the world.

Join me in asking Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler and Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray to have a heart and invest in kids by providing robust funding for critical early learning, child care and health programs.
