Battle Ground — As a way to introduce students to computer science and programming, Tukes Valley Middle School is offering a robotics elective for eighth-graders this year.

Technology teacher Sherry Lilly teaches the course, which covers foundational skills in science, technology, engineering and math. The students work with robots daily, learning about circuits and computers, hardware, software and firmware, and various programming concepts.

The students work in pairs on Lego robots, and use Mindstorm software to write algorithms and program blocks, as well as download, test and modify their projects.
