Letter: Compromise is not a dirty word

RINOs are Republicans in Name Only. Blue Dogs are moderate Democrats. Both terms are now used disparagingly, since these politicians do not always adhere to the party line. Indeed they are dying breeds, voted down during party primaries.

But current strict adherence to party ideology has gotten us only gridlock, party-line votes, year after year continuing resolutions, sequestration, weakening of our national defense, and the mess we’re in right now. Is anyone happy or satisfied with this result?

Leaders of both national parties point to our founding fathers to justify their rigid positions. But the founding fathers knew how to compromise. The Constitution is full of compromises. It is we, the people, who are ultimately responsible because we insist on electing ideologues when what we need are principled but pragmatic realists who know how to compromise, negotiate and get things done.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
