Cherish DesRochers, a Battle Ground City Council member, was awarded the Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities. It was presented to her by Mayor Mike Dalesandro at a June 18 city council meeting. The certificate recognizes elected city officials for completing training in four areas of local governance: roles, responsibilities and legal requirements; public sector resource management; community planning and development; and effective local leadership. DesRochers completed more than 30 hours of training credits to earn the certificate. She has served the city of Battle Ground since May 2015 when she was appointed to the city’s Planning Commission. In July 2016, the city council appointed her to fill a vacant seat. In November 2017, she was elected by voters to serve a four-year term.
Nathan Howard was hired by The Columbian as a full-time staff photographer, replacing Ariane Kunze. He was previously employed as a photographer and creative director at the biweekly Newport News-Times newspaper in Newport, Ore. He graduated from Washington State University’s Edward R. T. Randall “Randy” Grove and Philip B. Janney, estate planning and probate attorneys at Landerholm, P.S., a firm at 805 Broadway, Suite No. 1000 in Vancouver, were named to the Washington State Super Lawyers list as two of the top attorneys in Washington for 2018. An exclusive listing, no more than 5 percent of lawyers in the state are named to Super Lawyers, according to a news release by the firm. Grove has worked with Landerholm, P.S. since 1982. He received a bachelor’s degree from Seattle Pacific University and a juris doctorate degree from Willamette University College of Law in 1981. Janney attended Willamette University and received a juris doctorate degree from Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College.
Dawn Garzon Maaks, a clinical professor at Washington State University Vancouver College of Nursing, was named president of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She starts the one-year position today. During that time, she plans to focus on mental health, youth suicide and other topics. Garzon Maaks has worked in pediatric primary care for nearly 25 years, while also working in nursing education for 20 years. She has been a member of the association since 1995.
