The WDFW will host a hunter education course at the VFW Hall in Toutle from Aug. 8-11.
Online registration begins Saturday and ends Aug. 3. A deposit of $20per student (check made out to Herbert Jessen, Chief Instructor, and mailed/or dropped off 100 Stout Road, Silverlake WA 98645 as soon as possible). This is required to reserve a seat in the class.
A signed Parent Agreement Form is required for all students under the age of 18 and can be mailed or dropped off with the deposit.
This class (weather permitting) requires the discharge of live ammunition from a 223 rifle and a 20 gauge shotgun provided by the WDFW to pass the class. No personal firearms or ammunition are allowed in the class.

Apply for Cowlitz River advisory group
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is seeking to fill up to two positions on its Cowlitz River Advisory Group (CRAG). WDFW will accept applications through July 2018.
Formed in 2010, the group makes recommendations to the WDFW about Cowlitz River hatchery programs, fishery management issues, and recovery actions for wild fish population.
To ensure all relevant interests are represented, WDFW is seeking applicants from the sportfishing guide community and from local businesses affected by recreational fishing in the Cowlitz river basin.
The CRAG has up to 20 members, including anglers and others who recreate in the Cowlitz River basin and are affected by area fisheries and hatchery programs. Meetings occur four times a year, with additional meetings as needed.

Oregon offers shotgun skills classes
ODFW will host several shotgun skills workshops in Gervais, Portland and near Corvallis during July and August. The cost is $12 per participant, which is due when registering. Workshops are family-friendly with all ages welcome, though anyone under age 18 needs to be accompanied by an adult and youth participants need to be able to handle a shotgun. Taking one of these shotgun skills classes is required to sign up for ODFW’s popular fall pheasant hunting workshops for adults and families. (Pheasant hunts will happen Sept. 8 and 9 at Sauvie Island Wildlife Area and Sept. 15 and 16 at EE Wilson Wildlife Area this year.)
Oregon joins effort against lead ammo
The North American Non-Lead Partnership — formed late last year by the Oregon Zoo, The Peregrine Fund and the Institute for Wildlife Studies — seeks to expand the coalition of hunters, anglers and other conservationists dedicated to improving ecosystem and wildlife health by choosing non-lead options.
Two other states have joined the initiative, Arizona and Utah.
