Ridgefield — Sara Eastham and her second-graders at Union Ridge Elementary School have started taking short walks down the street to the Ridgefield Community Center each month. There, the students meet with a group of senior citizens enjoying some lunch at the community center. The bond formed in December, when Eastham’s class planned a community outreach project. “One of my students came up with the idea of making ornaments with senior citizens during their weekly meal at the community center,” Eastham said in a release. “The visit was so positive that we now plan monthly visits.” The seniors even brought gifts for the kids, and helped the students work on geometry, counting money, vocabulary and conversation skills. Eastham said the monthly trips to the community center went so well she plans on continuing them this upcoming school year.
