Fundraiser to focus on Foley orchard harvest

FELIDA — Slow Food Southwest Washington and its Urban Abundance program are holding a fundraiser around the seasonal harvest of pears from Foley Community Orchard in Felida.

The orchard off Northwest 21st Avenue has nearly 170 Bartlett pear trees, and harvested fruit will be donated to the Clark County Food Bank. This year, the nonprofit is asking people to pledge money for the total pounds of pears harvested, which they’re dubbing the Pick-A-Pear-A-Thon. Money raised will go toward Urban Abundance and its work maintaining four community orchards.

Donors can pledge any dollar amount for every pound of pears collected during the harvest, which generally happens in early August. Also, volunteers are welcome to help at the harvest.

“With so many weather-related variables, it’s hard to predict exact dates when the pears will be ready,” Allie Van Nostran, an AmeriCorps VISTA coordinating Urban Abundance, said in a news release. “We have neighbors keeping an eye on the trees, though, and once dates are set, we will call up volunteers through our email list and Facebook group.”
