There’s been more than enough whining about the “new” I-5 bridge. A new bridge would be practically built by now had it not been for Clark County politicians incessantly whining over its mass-transit component.
I ask these politicians: Was it really worth it? In fact, the only redeeming value to a new bridge is the mass-transit component. Why build it without mass transit? You’d have a more beautiful bridge, but same traffic bottleneck. Is several billion dollars worth it just to eliminate the seasonal inconvenience of bridge lifts?
Wake up, Clark County. You called the shots last time, and it was a disaster. You’ve had your chance. Your “partner,” Oregon, won’t budge until you put on your big-boy pants and join the 21st century. As Oregon wisely recognized four decades ago, there’s no future without mass transit.
