Letter: State misses opportunity with jobs

By Douglas Greene, Vancouver

In the June 22 classified/jobs section of The Columbian, I came across a solicitation for workers, with jobs paying a minimum of $15.91 per hour, and $23.87 for overtime, placed by Washington state’s workforce agency. It stated there was a need for 15 workers beginning May 31 and ending Nov. 30, with free transportation and meals, tools and equipment, all at no cost to the worker.

I find it incredulous that the state has to advertise in the paper for workers when so many are collecting unemployment benefits, participating in entitlement programs at the state and federal levels, or are homeless, yet the state can’t find eligible workers out of a pool of thousands to fill these 15 jobs dealing with landscaping labor.

What a wonderful opportunity it would be for an individual to learn a trade and become self-sufficient. Is our state’s database so inadequate that it cannot find individuals who want work and become productive members of society?
