Letter: Time for adults to wake up

It now appears the National Rifle Association wants us taxpayers to foot the bill ($20,000 in extra salary, benefits and liability insurance) in order to turn teachers into gunslingers, as well as educators. Next they will want us to arm the students, too. But this shouldn’t be surprising. Haven’t they already asked us to fund larger police forces, prisons and mental health facilities rather than seek some compromise on non-hunting assault weapons?

And now our kids are finally expressing how fed up they are with our lackadaisical attitude towards the added stress in their learning environment. They seem to be saying we adults are not only selfish and blind, but uncaring as well. This is a real slap in the face that should help wake us up.

But it won’t. Not until our student leaders realize that nothing is going to change until we get the big money out of politics. Their efforts should be focused at the state level to help ensure passage of state initiatives promoting an ongoing constitutional amendment that bans big money, and foreign interference, in our elections. Until we cancel out the NRA’s millions we won’t halt their “boy-toys at any cost” mentality.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
