BEND, Ore. — Authorities say the ex-boyfriend of an Oregon woman who disappeared last month was taken to a hospital after attempting suicide in a county jail.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate alerted jail staff Sunday night that Bryan Penner had tried to kill himself. Corrections deputies and a nurse began life-saving efforts, which continued until paramedics arrived and took him to a Bend hospital.

Penner’s ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Sara Gomez, was last seen Feb. 19. Penner was arrested two days later, accused of violating the restraining order Gomez took out against him. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of contempt of court.

He has not been charged in her disappearance.
