Letter: We need different leadership

By Ken Alexander, Camas
Published: May 8, 2018, 6:00am

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, told us that she did not support Donald Trump when he was her party’s candidate for president. She said he would have to earn her support. Apparently this happened the minute he was elected because, like nearly all of her Republican colleagues, she votes with Trump about 90 percent of the time and finds him a comfortable political ally because his policies on national security, immigration, taxation and gun control mirror hers.

I had given Herrera Beutler the benefit of the doubt until earlier this year when it became apparent that she is most definitely Trump’s gal in Southwest Washington. I hope that her prospective Democratic opponents in this year’s election do not follow her example and be two-faced political opportunists; most of us are sick of that and we want to see a different kind of leadership.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
