Letter: Make education a priority

The tragic events happening in some parts of the nation’s schools to our most vulnerable and precious population, America’s children, inspired me to speak out with concern, anger and emphatic disgust.

Some children are not safe in the classroom while many others are denied an appropriate basic education for the lack of adequate funding.

President Jefferson insisted that a great democracy requires a free public education system. He was a state’s rights believer and so, in writing the 10th Amendment to the Constitution (1791), he left the power of regulating and funding education to the separate states.

Currently, the USA annually dumps billions of dollars to numerous countries under the guise of protecting our national interest.

While the same Congress budgets to the states an infinitesimal (near zero) amount for education, some in Congress are proposing cuts to this measly amount that is currently provided.

If our democracy is to survive, it’s time we make American children’s education our highest national interest and priority. Give our children an incentive to compete globally for leadership and jobs.

Fail our children and they will fail you and the country.
