Letter: Costly war rages on

By David Bennett, Vancouver

Afghanistan has been in the news because of renewed violence. The Taliban recently launched an attack killing the governor of Kandahar, a senior Afghan police chief, and wounding three Americans.

We have been fighting this war for 18 years without success. According to the Pentagon, our country spends $45 billion per year on this conflict. Our government is interested in pressing ahead, because otherwise we would have to admit defeat and the folly of our effort.

How do Republicans and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, propose that we pay for our continued participation in this war? Their answer is by cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits for Americans.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
