Letter: Message to teens: Avoid nicotine

Teens are exposed to a whole new world of substances and experiences as they go into high school and college. This used to mean mainly smoking cigarettes, but government regulations and social campaigns have deterred teens, and have greatly decreased the number of active smokers.

However, this hasn’t stopped juuling and vaping to grow exponentially in popularity. These e-cigarettes use flavors and nicotine salts to make them both easily ingestible and highly addictive. Flavors like mango, mint and grape make teens want to try nicotine and mask the dangers of a nicotine addiction. I know a ton of teens who can’t make it through the day without juuling, and without the same level of protection there’s been for smoking, this problem will continue to grow.

Please talk to the teenager in your life about vaping. Encourage them to make a safe and healthy decision to avoid nicotine completely.
