Letter: Democrats are not the mob

The Oct. 27 letter “Democratic Party disappoints” (Our Readers’ Views) refers to the Democratic Party as “screaming protesters” and the “mob.” This seems a bit disingenuous, since, to me, the real mob is: 1) attendees at President Trump’s rallies chanting “lock her up” and applauding a congressman for body slamming a reporter; 2) an angry Trump supporter who sends bombs to prominent Democrats; 3) an anti-Semitic Nazi sympathizer who kills 11 people at a Jewish synagogue; 4) alt-right nationalists protesting in Charlottesville; and 5) Patriot Prayer protesters in Portland and Vancouver. There are not many Democrats in this group of mobsters.

But since the “dear leader” persists in calling Democrats the “mob,” his low-information followers have latched onto this mantra and use the common Trump strategy of making up whatever stories they want. The idea is that if they tell the same lies often enough, eventually some people will believe them to be true. It is our obligation as citizens to avoid spreading untruths. We should be well enough informed that we know when someone is lying to us.
