Letter: Blame California fires on landscape

By David Hastings, Brush Prairie

The wildfires in California are not “wild.” They will come and come again so long as California allows homes to be built in the midst of the chaparral biome which dominates the dry hills. These plants and scrubs are native, just about everywhere, and create the conditions for fire themselves because their existence depends upon fire. The resinous oil of these plants and trees is extremely flammable, volatile and fire is necessary for these plants to seed. Fire will come — you can be sure of it. Building homes surrounded by chaparral is as inane as surrounding your home with cans of gasoline. This needs to stop!
