Oregon man accused of lying about drive-by shooting

PORTLAND — A Lincoln City, Ore., man told police a stranger drove up to him on the street and shot a cellphone out of his hand, but he actually destroyed the device himself and grazed his nose when he accidentally fired a handgun while in his bedroom, authorities say.

It took two days for Isaiah Padron, 20, to admit to investigators there was no drive-by shooting and the man who he claimed fired on him at random while driving a black four-door sedan didn’t exist, according to a probable cause affidavit. It was after Lincoln City police confronted him about a reported stolen gun found in his bedroom, the court papers said.

According to police, Padron initially claimed he was walking on the street around 3:35 p.m. Monday when the shooting occurred. He said he didn’t know the alleged shooter.

On Wednesday, someone who witnessed the actual shooting turned over the handgun to police, and it was determined to have been stolen from a home in Sisters, the affidavit said.

Padron told police he bought the gun and 16 bullets for $400 from a stranger he met though a friend and said he didn’t know it was stolen, the affidavit said. Padron said he was in his family’s apartment when the gun discharged by accident.

Padron remained held Thursday in the Lincoln County Jail on suspicion of first-degree theft, unlawful purchase of a firearm, reckless endangering, disorderly conduct and filing a false police report.
