Letter: Airplane security needed, simple

The Columbian published an article on Nov. 16 regarding the Aug. 10 theft and crash of a Horizon passenger plane (“Sea-Tac reviewing security after theft of plane,” The Spokesman-Review). A summary of the article: In testimony before the state Senate Transportation Committee on Nov. 14, the director of Sea-Tac aviation security said that nothing could be done to prevent this theft.

Actually, what the director could have said was, “No one in Congress has taken this issue seriously enough to require airline security systems.” Does that not seem irresponsible?

Maybe the insurance companies should call the airline CEOs and require these systems. Each airline could manage its own security that would require authorization to start an airplane’s engines. If they need design help, they can call OnStar.

In honor of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
