Letter: Voting system is kept safe

The Nov. 16 front-page article “State’s voting security called out” (by the McClatchy Washington Bureau) was missing the all-important “Local Angle” that often accompanies a nonlocal article of great importance. The Columbian has always had unfettered access to the Clark County Elections Office in order to clarify vague allegations about the safety of our elections. In the current difficult political environment, this lack of local clarity is glaring.

Between the two major political parties and the League of Women Voters, there are over 100 certified election observers who spend untold hours observing our entire elections process, in order to assure themselves and the public that indeed Washington has one of the safest voting systems in the country.

In addition to technological security surrounding all aspects of voting, there are additional human/physical processes as well. Clark County Elections takes action daily (that is between elections), and again before each election to detect any unauthorized changes to our voter registration database.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
