Online WSU Extension class aids small forest area landowners

CHEHALIS — The Washington State University Extension Service will offer an online course aimed at helping landowners with forested property better manage their wooded lands.

The series of classes coaches landowners in writing a forest management plan for their property, based on their management objectives. It is geared toward landowners with a few wooded acres or large tracts of forest.

The management plan is key to accessing resources for small forest landowners, according to the extension, such as reduced property taxes, cost-share assistance programs, and becoming a state Department of Natural Resources-certified stewardship forest.

The course includes seven live, interactive webinars taught by state-recognized field experts, a field trip, a digital reference library, aerial photos and maps of participants’ property, a copy of “Native Trees of Western Washington,” a forest measurement tool, and a personal site visit from a professional forester. The course fee is $220, and participation requires a high-speed internet connection.

Classes run from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, from Jan. 24 to March 7, with the first class starting at 5:30 p.m. The field trip is scheduled for March 2.
