Jayne: What kind of man mocks woman’s pain? Our president

‘They laughed, didn’t they?” Biff said, sipping from a beer at the corner of the bar and casting a metaphorical line into the water.

“Who? What are you talking about?” Bubba answered, taking the bait like a famished salmon.

“Those people in Mississippi. They laughed when President Trump mocked the woman who says she was sexually assaulted by Judge Kavanaugh.”

“Sure they did; he was funny in that kind of addled-uncle way that he has.”

“Maybe. But I’m not sure that sexual assault allegations are a laughing matter under any circumstance. Shouldn’t we show empathy?”

“Oh, come on. All of this is just a Democratic ploy to undermine Kavanaugh’s nomination. She claims it happened 36 years ago, and there is no corroborating evidence.”

“Well, tell me this,” Biff added, setting the hook. “We don’t know whether the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh are true, right? And we never will. The FBI can investigate for a year, but we’ll never know beyond a reasonable doubt.”

“Right. That’s the point.”

“So let’s look at what we do know. We know that Kavanaugh lied to a Senate committee; that has been proven. We know he has a temper; he showed that to the whole country. We know he has been accused by multiple people of sexual assault. We know he found humor in drinking too much as a minor. We know he precipitated a bar fight in college. We know that he and his ‘bros’ used their high school yearbook to slut shame a girl they knew.”

“So?” Bubba asked.

“OK, we know all these things; they are indisputable. And if you knew these things about a young man, would you want your daughter to date him?”

“Of course not. Even if boys will be boys, using your yearbook to claim conquests with the same girl takes a special brand of jerk.”

“Exactly. Shouldn’t we have even higher standards for a lifetime job on the Supreme Court?”

“Yeah, but all of that was a long time ago. Sen. Lindsey Graham said Kavanaugh is ‘entirely ethical’; a ‘really decent person’; ‘warm, friendly, unassuming’; ‘the nicest person.’ And if you can’t believe Lindsey Graham, who can you believe?”

“And Lindsey Graham once suggested we all should have AR-15s in case the power grid collapses and there are armed gangs roaming around. So he might be prone to hyperbole. Sure, the allegations against Kavanaugh were a long time ago, but tell me this: Have you ever started a bar fight?”

“The day ain’t over yet; don’t tempt me.”

A horrible person

“It just seems as though President Trump went out of his way to pick somebody for the court who has history of poor judgment. As though the president intentionally chose the bro-iest bro he could find,” Biff said. “You knew guys like that in school; would you want any of them to be on the Supreme Court?”

“Heck, no. But all of this is overblown just because the Democrats don’t like Trump.”

“Well, even if you like his policies, you have to admit the president is a horrible person.”

“How can you say that about the president of the United States?”

“How can you not? He has mocked prisoners of war, a Gold Star family, a disabled journalist, countless others, and now a woman who claims she was sexually assaulted. That makes for a horrible, insecure person by any measure. Is he the kind of guy you would want to hang out with?”

“That doesn’t matter. It’s not his job to be cool.”

“Maybe not. But it seems that Trump brings out the worst of human nature in far too many Americans. A lack of empathy is not the kind of trait we should embrace in a civilized society.”

“Perhaps. But what does all of this have to do with supporters laughing in Mississippi?”

“Well, the president made fun of a woman who said she was attacked and people laughed, right? It all seems rather deplorable to me.”
