Columbian photographers shine in Associated Press Northwest photo contest

SEATTLE — Columbian photographer Alisha Jucevic and Photo Editor Amanda Cowan were among the winners of the 2018 Associated Press Northwest photo contest.

Jucevic won the coveted Cowles Cup Award and first place in the non-metro multiple-picture category for her work on a story about a young boy working to overcome a genetic condition that kept him from walking, while Cowan took second place in the non-metro multiple-picture category for her photos with a story about a teenage drag queen.

The Cowles trophy, awarded each year since 1952, is named for William Hutchison Cowles, former publisher of The Spokesman-Review. The Blackburn award is named for a photographer for The Columbian newspaper of Vancouver who was killed in the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens
